Unicorn Poop

I am such a girl in that I love rainbows, anything sparkly, and everything make-believe. When I saw this on pinterest, I almost exploded immediately with excitement.

Don’t be scared, it’s really just sugar cookies all dolled up. Tasty and cute, and I have a feeling little girls would LOVE this. I need to get me one of those.

I mostly followed the tutorial linked with the pin, but I put my own spin on it.

Store bought doughs do not work well for these cookies. The recipe must hold it’s shape well for them to turn out looking like poopies. This recipe is my go-to and would work really well for these cookies because it holds its shape.

I divided it up into 5 equalish sized balls. Instead of regualr rainbow colors, I girled it up even more: pink, yellow, green, blue, and purple.

I just added a bit of food coloring to the ball of dough, and carefully kneaded it until it was all mixed in. To avoid staining my hands, I put the dye in the middle and folded the dough over it. Then I kneaded it carefully keeping the dye in the center until it was mostly absorbed, then I was able to knead it like normal until it was all mixed in.

Using regular dropper-food coloring (like you buy at the grocery store) may not make as bright of colors and will be more likely to dye your hands. I recommend the Wilton food coloring gels that come in the little tubs at the craft store.

Just like with playdough, you want to make long skinny snakes. Then stack together the snakes until you have one of each color. My  snake was about 18″ long. Once I had all the colors, I broke it in half and rolled one half just enough to make all the snakes stick together. (If the dough is too sticky, you can use some flour when you roll it – it will not effect the outcome of the cookie.)

20120115-131141.jpg

Then twist the snake like this…

20120115-131152.jpg

Then coil it up on your cookie sheet to look like a poopy!

20120115-131200.jpg

Bake at 350*F about 8 minutes or so, depending on how big the “turds” are. I did some with sugar pearls, which have to be stuck into the turds prior to baking.

After the cookies are baked and cooled, it’s time for them to get sparkly! I used Wilton Sparkle Gel. (I found it in the cake section of the craft store, near the food coloring and premade icing.) I did not know this stuff existed until now, but I’m a little scared because it might end up on everything I make from here on out!

It reminds me of that nasty decorating gel they use on cakes, that blood-red goop, anyone know what I’m talking about? Except this stuff is clear and sparkly! I squirted a line across the cookie, then used a paint brush (that has never been used for paint by the way) to get it covering the entire unicorn’s doodoo. At this point, they are gorgeous…

20120115-131209.jpg

…but if you want to add a little bit of sprinkles, do it while the gel is still wet. I added some plain white nonpareils because they stood out really well.

20120115-131215.jpg

Who knew unicorns were that magical?

The next picture shows the sparkly-ness the best. These cookies are not wet, they’re just that shiny and sparkly!

20120116-074717.jpg

To sum it up like Kirsty Lynn said on the original post: “The amount of poops you will get from this recipe depends on how big your unicorn is.” LOL

… my unicorn made 44 poops about 2-3″ in diameter.

Beer Cookies

These were made for a friend’s friend’s husband’s birthday. The birthday boy loves Sierra Nevada beer, so these were done especially for him. (He also loves Budweiser but I was not brave enough to go there!)

I wanted to stick to the design of the real label as much as possible, so I formed a plan of attack before I did a single thing to the cookies. First I outlined the labels, then dropped some white dots in the center for the “mountain scene.”

20111221-221908.jpg

I wanted to wait for the green outline to dry completely before adding the brown bottle outline, because dark colors tend to bleed.

And bleeding cookies are just as yucky as real blood. Okay not really, but to a cookie decorator it’s just as tragic.

Anyways, so I went ahead and filled the green in next before adding any brown.

20111221-221914.jpg

Once the green was set, I outlined the rest of the bottle and carefully filled it in without letting any of the brown icing touch the still-wet green icing. It did touch on a few. I used those for practice when it came to the next steps…

20111221-221920.jpg

I put these away and waiting until the next day to do the detailing. I didn’t want to mess up the perfect smoothness of the icing! I first drew on the mountains and river, and piped trees and wheat next to it.

Let’s pretend I remembered to take a photo at that stage. It’s the first time I really used my food markers. They’re tricky on my icing because it’s not completely hard like royal icing. More practice is needed!

The text for “Sierra Nevada” was more difficult that I expected… I was nearly crying over these! (Out of frustration, not sadness.) I wanted it curved over the top of the mountain scene, but it didn’t fit. Then I tried curving “Sierra” over the top and “Nevada” under the bottom. Too much curving and I couldn’t get it right… I decided to just bite the bullet and go straight across with both. The harder I tried the sloppier it got. Piping words it hard! You just have to relax and go at it as natural as possible. Once I realized this (and stopped crying) I was more relaxed and they turned out better.

Okay, suspense is killing, here they are!

My favorite part is the bottle caps!

Six pack anyone? 🙂

Christmas Cookies

I made a variety of Christmas cookies… enjoy!

20111219-093407.jpg

Snowflakes… the ones above have sprinkles on the icing, the ones below just have sprinkles on the buttercream details…

20111219-094604.jpg

Candy Canes…

20111219-094143.jpg

Christmas Trees…

20111219-094131.jpg

Peppermint candies… I used this technique from Bridget over at Bake at 350. I never would have thought of doing it that way.. brilliant.

20111219-094652.jpg

I piped the red lines on the wet white icing, the swirled it with a toothpick 3 times.

20111219-094658.jpg

I added lines on the sides the next day. The red icing bled into the white a bit, but it works because they’re peppermint candies!

20111221-122214.jpg

Elf feet… similar to my witches’ feet I did for Halloween.

20111219-094136.jpg

I used a food color marker to draw the shoes on the first few until I got the shape down right.

20111219-094904.jpg

Presents/Gifts… I am pretty much obsessed with these. The bows came out so much nicer than I expected!

20111219-094158.jpg

20111219-094152.jpg

Gingerbread houses… I wanted to go candy/sprinkle crazy on these, but I didn’t have enough time.

20111219-094557.jpg

Rudophs… both the houses above and the rudoph heads were made with chocolate sugar cookie dough. More of these to come, but the recipe needs perfecting first.

20111219-094620.jpg

Santa Bellies…

20111219-094240.jpg

Ornaments…

20111219-094213.jpg

Penguins… I intended these to have cute little hats/ear muffs and hands/feet, but I ran out of time.

20111219-094629.jpg

Christmas Lights… I wanted to make every color, but I didn’t have any more frosting and icing to dye, and it was too late at night to make more just for a few lights… I like how they turned out with the sparkles though!

20111219-094204.jpg

So it was midnight… and like I said, I didn’t have anymore frosting  or icing, and didn’t feel like making more. So instead of these becoming the rest of the Santa Bellies as intended, they got the lazy treatment…

20111219-094125.jpg

and why were these the favorite of my family?! I swear I should just make circles for every holiday and cover them with sprinkles instead of doing all the fun little shapes. It would save me time and my sanity! On a brighter note, aren’t the sprinkles I used awesome?! Found them at Target while perusing down the baking aisle… I love Target.

Christmas Cookie Favors

These are some Christmas cookie favors I made… It was a little last minute so I had to go with something simple yet festive.

I did Christmas Trees, Ornaments, and Snowflakes.

The Snowflakes are defnititely my favorite. I have been pinning snowflakes like crazy lately!

Each bag contained one of each cookie shape.

Necktie Cookies

“Our lil’ guy in a cute lil’ tie is turning 1.”

These cookies were made to match the invitations (below) and decor of a little 1 year old’s birthday party – which was held on Thanksgiving day!

I used a 5″ necktie cookie cutter. Shape wasn’t as great as I would have liked, but I fixed that with the outlining. I stressed so much over how to do these large polka dots… I couldn’t do edible pens or candy, because the colors were so specific. Navy blue, light blue, red, brown, and greenish yellow.

My best options were: (sorry I am about to ramble a bit you can skip ahead if you want…)

1. Do the dots in icing, wet-on wet method. My worries included:

       – I would do too much white icing (background) and adding the dots would overflow the cookie.

       –  I would do too little white icing and I wouldn’t be able to fix it after the dots were added.

       –  The dots wouldn’t be uniform in size/shape.

2. Do the dots in buttercream. Worries included:

       –  Coloring buttercream is more difficult. The color deepens over time, so it’s harder to match colors exactly.

       –  Doing the buttercream in the cookie then fill in the background around it: uneven, over flooding, weird levels…

       –  Ice the cookie, wait for it to dry, and do dots on top in buttercream: less room for error, possibly too much texture…

I ended up going for the very last option. I was worried about the height of the dots if I did it on top, but it ended up working out well. I let the frosting get soft, so when I filled in the dots they “melted” together a bit and looked more like a solid dot than a stripey filled circle.

Cute right?! I have a good idea for another use for this cookie cutter… should pop up pretty soon actually!

Thanksgiving Cookies

Here are the thanksgiving cookies I made for my family. Hope everyone had a good day with friends, family, and great food!

20111124-185445.jpg
I did both oak and maple leaves. I used red and pale green (leftover colors from some cookies that will be on the next post), and yellow and orange.

For the turkeys I used a wet-on-wet icing method and a toothpick to create the colorful feathers.

20111124-185834.jpg

20111124-185909.jpg

After letting the icing dry a bit, I added the beak, feet, and wattle. (I had to ask my father-in-law what that red thing is called!)

Thanksgiving morning when the cookies were nice and dry, I used my new food color markers to draw on the eyes.

California Capitol Cookies

This is my second round of building cookies. I made Washington Capitol cookies a while back, and these were a little similar. I actually used the same cutter, with just a few tweaks. Here is the cutter..

cheapcookiecutters.com

For the California Capitols, I cut off the little nob on the top of the sides, and extended the bottom about a quarter inch.

(Let’s pretend that I didn’t take my one-and-only photo of the unfrosted capitols with the only cookie I forgot to cut a nub off of front and center!)

I outlined the base and divided it up into the different sections, then filled every other section.

After it dried a bit I filled in the rest of the sections.

After it dried, I reoutlined the sections and added column and window detail.

Then I squirted a small blob of frosting on the tip tops, and dunked it in gold sugar crystals.

I waited as long as I could before doing the black domes. I was so worried it would bleed into the white buttercream that was touching it. (I got lucky and not a single one bled!)

I used buttercream and a big tip, and piped it up and down to create the line definition on the cookies.

I also made California’s to pair with the capitol buildings. I added stars on the capital of course..

My husband was a geography major so he wanted to make sure I got Sacramento in the correct spot. He used a toothpick to poke a hole in the correct place for my star.

I had to carefully bag them so that you could see both cookies.

All ready to go!

Anniversary Cookies

I recently acquired a full set of alphabet cutters. Just in time, because a romantic boyfriend wanted to give his lady a unique gift for their anniversary. Each letter of “happy anniversary Sunita” would be its own cookie! Her favorite color is purple, but besides that he had no ideas.

I decided to do two different shades of purple to add a little more pizzazz. Then each and every cookie got its own unique pattern. I had a lot of fun making these! They came out really cute, and looked awesome once they were laid out for their special message.

I also did a couple little hearts in between the words…

On the Y in anniversary I wrote the date…

And on the S in Sunita I did an i ❤ you.

These were a lot of fun, and I hear the lucky lady enjoyed them!

Tea Party Teacups

A tea party theme for a little girl’s birthday – how cute is that! I’m so happy I was able to participate with cookies. Happy Birthday Julia!

Decor colors were pink, purple, blue, green, and yellow – basically amazing. I did a few teacups in each color, and different designs and cup/handle styles for each. Every cookie was completely unique!

All of the tea cups together…

Yankees Cookies

These were the hardest cookies I have made so far.

And they didn’t go exactly as I had planned.

The request was for Yankees Pinstriped Jerseys, with the birthday boy’s last name across the back. He was turning 30, so that is the number for the jersey.

I have to say – I am not a Yankees fan. I had to google images to make sure I got the design right. The pinstripes go up the sleeves and then down the back. And where they meet, there is no line. That made these especially challenging. Here is how I did the pinstripes:

I had originally planned on doing the pinstripes in food color marker, but I was unable to find a dark blue marker. The one I had was a sky blue and that is not acceptable for Yankees!

After I let the stripes dry, I piped on the name and number 30.

Here they are all ready to go! They were stacked in a white metal bucket for display.

These took a loooong time and my hand was killing me, but I pushed through and made these cookies happen!
