Mickey & Minnie Baby Shower Cookies

This mama-to-be is so very special to me. We’ve known each other since first grade. We went to elementary, middle, and high school together and I introduced her to her husband, who was a coworker of mine. And now they’re about to have their first baby! It was a Mickey and Minnie themed shower, and I got to make the cookies.

I’ve made Mickey cookies once before (here) but I knew I wanted to do something different this time. And since they’re having a little girl, of course I had to do Minnie too!

Sidenote – I decided years ago that I’m not making character cookies anymore. It’s so difficult to achieve the likeness of a character and it was way too stressful. Everyone is their own worst critic, and I was NOT nice to myself when I made characters. Instead, I prefer to do details and patterns that are still representative of the character or theme – but stress free!

I did a basic Mickey… (because it’s so easy and recognizable – you don’t even need a face!)

… Minnie’s bow (which I learned the hard way is NOT actually shaped like a bow) (can you tell what cutter shape I ended up using?) …

Minnie’s heels…

…and baby onesies! The G is for Gloria. Isn’t that the most gorgeous name?!

I was so happy with how these turned out. The colors really popped and they looked great with the rest of the decor and food.

Wizard of Oz Cookies

Miss Hannah just turned 1! We celebrated Hannah at this baby shower and at this gender reveal dinner.

Her party theme was Wizard of Oz, and her mama did an AMAZING job with all the little details! Parties can drive a modern mama crazy, but once it’s all pulled together it’s spectacular!

I was up for the task of making the cookies of course. I had a hard time deciding what to make because there are so many fun ideas with this theme! I decided to go with rainbows, ruby red slippers, and a bit of yellow brick road.

Here is my progression with the rainbows… I wanted it to be as even as possible but didn’t want to have to mark out the cookie ahead of time.

I filled each rainbow color below the line it matched, if that makes sense. I started with every-other color to make sure nothing ran together while it was wet. Then I came back a little while later and did the rest.

For the yellow brick road I decided to line it all ahead of time and fill each section individually to give it dimension.

I think this was the first time I made so many colors WITHOUT making pink. It was weird. And it may never happen again. 🙂

The ruby red slippers. *sigh*

I outlined and filled in red, then added some disco dust once they were totally dry. I used a paint brush to just barely wet the top with vodka (don’t freak out, it evaporates) then sprinkled the sparkles across the cookie. Let it dry overnight, then used another dry paintbrush to brush off all the excess. There was sparkles EVERYWHERE.

Here are the finished cookies all together.

Love the dimension on the yellow brick road cookies.

It’s hard to capture just how sparkly the shoes were. I kind of want to sparkle everything now. #sparkleallthethings

So lucky to get to make these for little miss Hannah.

Now here are a couple of the other details from the party…

Racecar Cookies

I bought a 3D printed racecar cutter that was going to be PERFECT for these racecar cookies for Syler’s Hotwheels party. When it came time to cut and bake the cookies, I pulled out the cutter and it had somehow gotten warped! Like unfixable, way too skinny, crooked warped.

Onto Plan B. I’ve had this 57 Chevy cutter since way back when – when I made 300 of them. It is way too long and fancy for racecars, so I had to do quite some trimming. I used my warped cutter as a reference.

I outlined in black to make the colors POP.

Then filled them in a bright blue.

I added window and tires, then red rims and a big red 4. Because Syler is 4! (Remember when he was 3? and 2? and 1?) I can’t believe I’ve had the privilege of making cookies for every birthday he’s had!

Happy Birthday Syler!

Valentine Owl Cookies

Whoooooo is your valentine?

IMG_8695

Sorry, had to.

But seriously. Owl be your Valentine.

IMG_8696

Okay I’ll stop now. 🙂

I made these cute little love birds for Valentine’s Day. Kept it simple by having only 1 color of outline/detail, and just a couple other colors for them all.

I love the way they turned out! ❤

Sexy Undies Cookies

These cookies, believe it or not, were for a man’s 60th birthday! I think they are just perfect for Valentine’s Day though!

I love doing cookies like this because I can do every single one different and unique and yet the whole set goes so well together. And it’s so fun to look at all the designs and try to pick a favorite!

These started out as a heart cookie cutter, and I just cut the tip off to make a nice round canvas. 🙂 And of course I had to do black and red because those are the “sexiest” colors!

I did all kinds of undies…

2015/01/img_8512.jpg

and some cute bras to go along with them…

2015/01/img_8515.jpg

The details are what really make them all so different. Dots and bows and ties…

2015/01/img_8516.jpg

These were so fun to make and I hope they inspire you to make something fun and naughty for Valentines Day too!

Ladybug Cookies

These cookies were for my coworker’s best friend. She had a ladybug themed birthday party!

I used my balloon cutter for these. (I also have a mini ornament that would work for mini version!)

20140518-185741.jpg I outlined them in a thick black line, then dropped a dot in the center, and another in the center of the top half.

20140518-185748.jpg First I piped the head, then I piped the wings fanning away from it. Took me a few tries to get the angles right.

20140518-185800.jpg I always fill in my black first, because it tends to be much messier if I make a mistake!

20140518-190225.jpg Then I filled in the red, with a little less icing than normal…

20140518-190232.jpg …because I dropped big black dots right into it for my ladybug’s spots.

20140518-190238.jpg Finished them off with some curly antennae, and viola! Cute little ladybug cookies.

20140518-190248.jpg Mini ladybugs would be totally cute for a little girl’s birthday!

Spiderman Cookies

Syler is 3! (He used to be 2. Before that he was 1.)

He had a Spiderman birthday, complete with cookies!

20140221-214714.jpg

I used an Easter egg cutter, turned upside down. Outlined in black, then dotted the center for reference for my eyes. I just did them by hand, so each cookie is slightly different, but all of them look like Spidy!

20140221-214730.jpg

Filled them all in dark red…

20140221-214734.jpg

Then piped on the web design in black buttercream. I even made Syler a special “3” cookie.

20140221-214738.jpg

Syler’s sisters got their very own cookies for their ages too. I’ve made Layla cookies for her 3rd birthday and her 2nd birthday. This year I was having a baby and couldn’t make her 4th birthday cookies, or her sister Aurora’s 1st birthday cookies. I wanted to make it up to them a little bit!

Crab Claw Cookies

Every year I bake sugar cookies for the crab feed at my mother-in-law’s church. They host a dessert live auction. My silly grandpa-in-law bids on (and wins) them every year. Haha…

I do something different every time. You can see the past years’ cookies here and here.

This year I was stumped for an idea. UNTIL I went to another crab feed and saw these adorable headbands the volunteers were wearing. They looked something like this. I immediately knew what I was going to make and which cutter I was going to use.

Here is my sketch… Do you recognize the cutter?! It’s a Christmas light bulb!

20140206-204054.jpg

I outlined with a thick black line (buttercream)…

20140206-204046.jpg

…then filled them in with a dark bright red.

20140206-204032.jpg

These couldn’t be any easier. Which worked out well for baking with a tiny baby in the house. More time for snuggles!

Sesame Street Birthday

Drew just turned 1! He was still in the belly for the baby celebration that I made the green onesies for from this post.

The party theme was Sesame Street, and I got to make all the treats!

Of course there had to be character cookies. I don’t have the cutters, so I made do with what I had. Cookie Monster and Elmo were created with a flower cutter and an egg cutter. For Big Bird I just bent my balloon cutter a bit to make the beak straight.

20130318-093441.jpg

For these characters, I knew black outlining was the way to go. It really make the features and colors pop.

20130318-093451.jpg

As always, I free-handed the designs. Cuz that’s how I roll.

20130318-093500.jpg

20130318-093506.jpg

Last minute I decided I had to have cookie cereal to go on the cookie monster cookies. I got the idea from cupcakes like this that I’m sure just about everyone has seen at some point. It’s pretty genius whoever thought of it!

20130318-093611.jpg

I also made cupcakes in the same colors as the characters. Piped simple swirls, and make custom cupcake toppers.

20130318-102134.jpg

My husband actually made them on the computer for me and I just cut and put them together. 🙂

20130318-102144.jpg

My most favorite part was the smash cake! Mama asked for it to be Cookie Monster, so I swirled it in bright blue frosting and piped the happy little face on the top.

20130318-093642.jpg

Then I stuck cookie cereal to the sides. 🙂

20130318-093626.jpg

Mama said Drew loved his cake. Once he got started, it was hard to get him to stop!
