Wizard of Oz Cookies

Miss Hannah just turned 1! We celebrated Hannah at this baby shower and at this gender reveal dinner.

Her party theme was Wizard of Oz, and her mama did an AMAZING job with all the little details! Parties can drive a modern mama crazy, but once it’s all pulled together it’s spectacular!

I was up for the task of making the cookies of course. I had a hard time deciding what to make because there are so many fun ideas with this theme! I decided to go with rainbows, ruby red slippers, and a bit of yellow brick road.

Here is my progression with the rainbows… I wanted it to be as even as possible but didn’t want to have to mark out the cookie ahead of time.

I filled each rainbow color below the line it matched, if that makes sense. I started with every-other color to make sure nothing ran together while it was wet. Then I came back a little while later and did the rest.

For the yellow brick road I decided to line it all ahead of time and fill each section individually to give it dimension.

I think this was the first time I made so many colors WITHOUT making pink. It was weird. And it may never happen again. 🙂

The ruby red slippers. *sigh*

I outlined and filled in red, then added some disco dust once they were totally dry. I used a paint brush to just barely wet the top with vodka (don’t freak out, it evaporates) then sprinkled the sparkles across the cookie. Let it dry overnight, then used another dry paintbrush to brush off all the excess. There was sparkles EVERYWHERE.

Here are the finished cookies all together.

Love the dimension on the yellow brick road cookies.

It’s hard to capture just how sparkly the shoes were. I kind of want to sparkle everything now. #sparkleallthethings

So lucky to get to make these for little miss Hannah.

Now here are a couple of the other details from the party…

Fingernail Polish Cookies

HOW CUTE are these?!?

IMG_7997.JPG

A coworker asked me to make these for her friend’s 11 year-old daughter.

I used my wine bottle cookie cutter, and trimmed as necessary.

IMG_7990.JPG

I outlined in all black because it makes the colors pop.

Then just made the brightest funnest (yes I said funnest) colors I could! The white “glare marks” really brought them to life.

Pool Party Cookies

Jose turned 11 on the 4th of July! He had a pool party to celebrate, so there had to be matching cookies!

Lacy Easter Egg Cookies

Made these for a friend’s mom for a get-together.

Even though they are pretty detailed, they didn’t take a ton of time to do. Filling the eggs with a solid color and only using one color to pipe with saves a TON of time.

20140417-082003.jpg

Each cookie is totally unique. I just made up the designs as I went, there was no template that I followed. Doing this also makes it more fun!

20140417-082009.jpg Once I was done making the cookies for the party, I had a few leftover that I played with. I really like how these “swoop” designs turned out too. And SO easy.

Lollipop Cookies

My second baby shower’s theme was “She is about to POP!” My girls know how obsessed with bright colors I am, so they chose bright bright shades of pink, green, blue, yellow, purple, and orange.

20130824-120456.jpg

I made cake pops and kettle corn, as well as these Lollipop Cookies. (The cake pops were funfetti, and all coated in white candy melts, then topped with bright jimmies in all the coordinating colors. I ddn’t have time time take pictures before the party, and then it was so hot outside that they all got melty and slid down their sticks. Too messy for photo taking, but still delicious!)

20130824-120431.jpg

I was feeling lazy (and crunched for time) when it came time to decorate these, so I skipped the outlining step and made the icing thicker than normal. Then all we had to do was pipe a swirl onto the cookie, and then repeat in the other colors.

20130824-120442.jpg

Once they were wrapped like lollipops they looked adorable!

Even the cleanup was pretty. 🙂

What’s It Gonna Bee? [My Baby Shower]

My mommy is AMAZING. She threw a wonderful baby shower for me a couple weeks ago. When trying to find a good and easy theme, I stumbled upon “What’s It Gonna Bee?” on Pinterest. Usually this is used for gender reveal parties, but since hubby and I aren’t finding out the sex of our little one, we thought the theme was perfect.

Here is the invitation:

20130724-114840.jpg

I made the treats. People were kind of freaking out that I shouldn’t have to make the desserts for my own party, but I feel like it would have been more weird to come to a party for me and there not be Carrie’s Creations cookies!

I fell in love with this photo a while back, and if anyone knows who it belongs to please let me know! I saved the photo from a google search to my phone and the uploaded that to my Pinterest board later… but I have been unable to find it since to give credit to where credit is due.

20130724-115741.jpg

I was unable to find a cutter in this shape, but I did find this cutter made by Cristin’s Cookies.

20130724-115656.jpg

I modified the inspiration picture above to fit Cristin’s cutter shape, and I have to say – I think I like it better!

20130724-114720.jpg

I outlined the whole bee in black, then filled in each section one color at a time.

20130724-114730.jpg

In addition to the cookie favors, I made cupcakes. Lemonade Cupcakes to be exact – some of my favorite, and they fit with the warm weather (hottttt weather actually) and the yellow theme.

Here is my inspiration picture, also found through google searching, and also without proper credit.

20130724-115724.jpg

I had a hard time finding little bees for the tops. I eventually stumbled upon these sugar bees at Layer Cake Shop, and they were perfect! I piped the frosting using a basic round tip to mimic the hive look, without overdoing it on the frosting.

(the fruit salad a family friend made – her sex vote is girl btw, haha…)

20130724-114815.jpg

(some of the other foods served, and the little tags I made.. they’re hard to see but each tag has a little bee on it similar to the centerpieces)

20130724-114825.jpg

(and one of the games we played… everyone got to make their guess, and we will just have to wait and see who gets the closest!)

It was a great shower and thank you to Mommy, Sandy, and Ann for helping out!!

Masquerade Cookie Pops

These are in the running for my favorite cookies I’ve ever made.

An old coworker asked for cookies for a Masquerade themed party. My husband suggested putting them on sticks as cookie pops so that they would be more realistic as masks. What a perfect idea!

I made them extra thick to hold up on the sticks, then iced them with a similar technique as these Fall Leaf Cookies. Except this time I couldn’t dunk them in a bowl because of the stick, so I had to work on a flat platter instead.

20130615-072056.jpg

Each cookie came out completely unique in color and swirl.

Once they were dry, I piped white designs on them. I love the way the white popped against the bright colors. Each one had a unique design on it as well, because I just “winged it” for each one.

Once they were all ready, I bagged them individually to be given as favors. I’m so glad she liked them as much as I did!

Thank You Cookies

I was given free reign to make some simple Thank You cookies for someone. I had been craving summertime, so I went with bright & cheery summer colors.

This is another new font I’ve tried lately. I like it because it’s cute and easy without being too cutesy. If that makes sense.

Sesame Street Birthday

Drew just turned 1! He was still in the belly for the baby celebration that I made the green onesies for from this post.

The party theme was Sesame Street, and I got to make all the treats!

Of course there had to be character cookies. I don’t have the cutters, so I made do with what I had. Cookie Monster and Elmo were created with a flower cutter and an egg cutter. For Big Bird I just bent my balloon cutter a bit to make the beak straight.

20130318-093441.jpg

For these characters, I knew black outlining was the way to go. It really make the features and colors pop.

20130318-093451.jpg

As always, I free-handed the designs. Cuz that’s how I roll.

20130318-093500.jpg

20130318-093506.jpg

Last minute I decided I had to have cookie cereal to go on the cookie monster cookies. I got the idea from cupcakes like this that I’m sure just about everyone has seen at some point. It’s pretty genius whoever thought of it!

20130318-093611.jpg

I also made cupcakes in the same colors as the characters. Piped simple swirls, and make custom cupcake toppers.

20130318-102134.jpg

My husband actually made them on the computer for me and I just cut and put them together. 🙂

20130318-102144.jpg

My most favorite part was the smash cake! Mama asked for it to be Cookie Monster, so I swirled it in bright blue frosting and piped the happy little face on the top.

20130318-093642.jpg

Then I stuck cookie cereal to the sides. 🙂

20130318-093626.jpg

Mama said Drew loved his cake. Once he got started, it was hard to get him to stop!

Yo Gabba Gabba Cookies

Syler turned 2 this last weekend! Last year I made these Monkey cookies from this post for his party. This year his birthday was Yo Gabba Gabba themed!

Last summer I first learned Yo Gabba Gabba when I made this very special cake for a very special friend of mine. Since then, I have been scared to make Yo Gabba Gabba cookies. Not only are the characters all uniquely shaped, but as a group they total 10 colors!

When Syler’s mom asked me to make Yo Gabba Gabba cookies for the party, I was relieved that she liked the idea of doing simple circle shaped cookies with just the basic elements of each character.

Yo Gabba Gabba Cookies

Each cookie was bagged and tied with tags as his party favors.

Mama said Syler loved his cookies!

As part of Lilaloa’s February challenge of Sketching your cookie designs before you cookie them, I thought I would share my sketches. I typically do these before a complicated set, or if I am not sure the exact shape of something (for example when I’m doing animals) so I can play with it until I am happy with the outcome.

20130227-190027.jpg

So glad Georgeanne had such a fun challenge for February and I got it in in just the nick of time!

I will post more of my sketches soon. Every cookier has their own way of doing things and I’d love to share my method in case it helps anyone else!
