Unicorn Birthday

My little Audrey turned ONE and we threw her a magical unicorn birthday party!

Here are some of the fun details. 🦄

((I will do separate posts for the cookies and cake. They were so fun to make!))

(Don’t worry she’s not crying here, the wind was making her eyes water!)

I made Fruity Pebble Rice Krispie Treats and a Rainbow Fruit Tray.

This is the smash cake I made…

There were also funfetti cupcakes with vanilla buttercream. I made my own sprinkle medley for these.

The rainbow cookies were the favors.

This birthday sign is from this Etsy shop. She made one a couple years ago for Levi’s first birthday.

So hard to believe my last little baby is ONE!

Taco Cake

This cake almost didn’t get made.

Levi said he wanted an “orange cake, yellow inside, with orange candles.”

I was trying to convince him to have ice cream cones instead of cupcakes (no baking needed!) when he told me his cake desires.

I checked that he didn’t maybe mean cupcakes??

Nope. Cake.

Fine.

Then, about a week before his party he told me he wanted a taco cake. *sigh*

Pinterest had a few different versions but I had to kind of combine the ideas to get what I had in mind.

I made 2 cakes and cut them both in half. I added frosting between them and once it had set a bit I turned them on their sides and frosted them with a crumb coat. Then I did a smooth frost of taco shell yellow frosting on just the outsides of the tacos and along the edges.

After the frosting had set up a little I moved them carefully to a cake board. It wasn’t really big enough so I had to put the tacos close together.

I piped brown “meat” buttercream near the bottom of the taco and then swirled it with the tip of s fork to add texture. Next I added lettuce with a leaf tip and green buttercream. I added layers in different directions and of different lengths to make it look more full and realistic.

Lastly I added cheese and tomatoes with buttercream. I tried to be as random as I could to make it look more realistic.

To cut the cake I just sliced it straight down from the top. After he’d blown out his candles of course. 😁

You can see the rest of the party here and the taco cookies I made here.

Taco Cookies

I shared my son’s taco birthday party here. But I wanted to do a special post for just the cookies themselves.

These were SO fun to make!

I used a crinkle edged circle cutter, then cut them in half with my spatula.

I outlined in buttercream and filled the tacos with “taco shell yellow” glacé which I made by mixing Wilton buttercup and golden yellow.

For the speckles I used this technique for splattering brown food coloring. Some of them got a little too speckled but in the end it just made them all unique!

Once the shells were dry I added buttercream “meat” brown blobs.

I alternated the blobs with leafy green buttercream stars. All of my leaf tips were way too big for these cookies, so the star tip was the next best thing.

Lastly I added the cheese and tomatoes with orange and red buttercream.

Because I wanted to present the cookies as “pantloads,” I wanted them wrapped individually and carefully so that you could see the tacos clearly. I cut the bags short and taped them down the back.

I love how these turned out! So simple yet so detailed and cute!

Fiesta First Birthday

Colette was born on Cinco de Mayo. What better way to celebrate than to have a fiesta for her first birthday!?

I happened to have this mini donkey cutter that I knew would be perfect for piñatas.

This is my favorite flower cutter. I knew it would make awesome colorful flowers for this set.

I modified an ice cream cone cutter to make these maracas cookies. Obviously a baby rattle would be perfect.

I made one extra special cookie. Cole’s family lost their very special pup Beanie a while back. He was so special that I had previously made cookies of him for their wedding. I used the cutter to make a Beanie piñata. I think he looks pretty cute in color. 💙

**Disclaimer: I made these last year but didn’t get them up in time for Cinco de Mayo. Colette is actually almost 2 now!**

My Little Pony Cookies

I still make things. Not as often, but I do. They just never seem to make it onto here.

I while back I made these My Little Pony Cookies. I was’t going to share them, but it’s been awhile now and I’m not feeling so self conscious about them anymore so I decided why not post them.

I don’t usually do characters (because they’re very hard) but I bought special cutter that indented a lot of the detail lines so I felt more comfortable taking on the challenge.

I like to outline in a dark color like this to create that “coloring book” feel. It also makes the images pop really well.

The hard part about filling in all of these little sections is they tend to crater. You can see this better in the next picture.

This is the finished product for this one. I wasn’t super happy with how they turned out, but I know I’m my harshest critic sometimes. I had a really rough time with the eyes. Is there a cookie character eye class I can attend? Ugh.

The next one was not as many tiny spaces to fill, but it had it’s own challenge.

This one has stripes in the tail, so I had to do a wet-on-wet technique.

Here’s the finished product. Again the eyes are rough and there is some cratering, but not too bad.

Thankfully I didn’t have to do too many ponies, because there were amazing rainbows to go with this set too. Can’t go wrong with a perfect rainbow! I pieced these together with a small flower cutter that I smooshed a little, and a couple circle cutters for the rainbow.

The birthday girl’s name went on the clouds.

I usuallly just google a bit and then “wing it” with my fonts. I like how this one turned out.

Little girls (and big girls) love sprinkles, so I rounded out the set with some rainbow sprinkled 4’s.

For the record, I’ve sworn off characters for now, they give me way too much anxiety. 😛

Bowling Cookies

I made these cookies for Eli who turned 4 and had a bowling party.

IMG_8538

I made the balls swirled just like the real ones at the bowling alley. They ended up looking totally 3D which was awesome!

Piping a perfect circle for the ball turned out to be harder than I thought. Especially since only half of the circle matched up with the outside of the cookie. After doing a few (and making many fixes) I decided to trace a circle cutter onto the cookie with a food color marker. It worked FABULOUSLY and saved me so much time and aggravation!

IMG_8529 IMG_8525

I filled in the ball as thinnly as I could with blue icing, then added the white to make the swirl.

IMG_8533 IMG_8534

Then I used a toothpick to “mix” the white into the blue and make the swirly effect,

IMG_8532 IMG_8535

For the red lines I used a thicker tip so that I could make wide flat lines on the pins.

I just love the way they turned out!

Pumpkin Smash Cake

Reese turns 1 right around Thanksgiving time, so her party was pumpkin themed!

IMG_8114.JPG

I got to make the smash cake!

Poor Reese got burned on her candle while everyone was singing to her, so she was terrified of her cake from that point on.

Mama had to cut it up to give her some, at which point all was again right with the world. 🙂

Cookie Dough Brownie Bombs

I made these for a good friend of mine for his birthday. He is sweets obsessed. Like, I couldn’t even get his wife to tell me what his favorite thing is, because he just likes everything! We work together, so naturally everyone at work got to enjoy them too.

The idea came from a fellow (local) blogger, Hayley. You may have heard of or seen her blog Domestic Rebel. She comes up with desserts you would see in your Candyland dreams. She is known for her brownie bombs, and they’ve been on my to-make list for awhile. They were the perfect treat for my sweet-a-holic friend.

Basically you start with a ball of cookie dough. I made my Pregnant Lady Cookie Dough (which is eggless), and added mini M&M’s. Freeze them so they’re nice and hard and cold.

IMG_7899.JPG

The next step is to make brownies. I used a regular fudgey brownie box mix.

IMG_7900.JPG

You cut the brownies, then smoosh them between your fingers…

IMG_7901.JPG

IMG_7902.JPG

…then wrap the smooshed brownie around a frozen cookie dough ball. Keep smooshing until the whole ball is covered.

Next you dip the ball (which is now HUGE from the brownie) into chocolate.

I got all the way to this step before realizing I had no chocolate chips. Excuse me WHAT?! How does a baker run out of chocolate chips?

IMG_7904.JPG

I had some leftover candy melts on hand, so I decided to just use those instead. It actually worked out okay, they kinda looked like birthday balloons! I topped them with a little sprinkles, just to help hide any imperfections from using old candy melts.

IMG_7905.JPG

IMG_7906.JPG

Because of the cookie dough, these need to be kept in the refrigerator.

IMG_7907.JPG

OMG these are yummy. I have this thing against chocolate (and brownies), so they were a little too rich for me to eat a whole one. Did I mention they were huge? My husband loved them, as did all of my coworkers. I think my brother (who is far away in the Navy) cried a little when he saw me post a picture of these. I will definitely have to make them for him when he comes home!

Carter is 1

My little man turned 1 year old a couple weeks ago!

I didn’t go all out with the sweets cuz I had so many other things to get ready.

We had a pirate themed party.

Here are the cookies I made:

Pirate Cookies

I made funfetti cupcakes with bright blue buttercream frosting. Unfortunately no one remembered to take any pics.

And a personal little cake for my birthday boy. First time he’s had sugar and he LOVED it of course!

Carters Cake

I spent a ton of time making him a birthday board. I am a perfectionist and it was agonizing. Cookies are easier! Ha. But I am pretty happy with how it turned out.

Birthday Board

Happy 1st Birthday to my little man!

Scooby Doo Cookies

This may be the most intimidating set of cookies I have ever agreed to do… but it turned out one of the best!

Matthew was having a Scooby Doo party and his mom Michelle surprised him with these matching cookies!

I made Scooby faces….

Scooby Snacks (bones) which topped the birthday cupcakes (I did not make the cupcakes; mom added them when she got home).

…and Mystery Machines! These were tough and may have almost made me crazy, but all that goes out the window when they turn out so cute!

I’m so glad Michelle and Matthew loved their cookies. They’re definitely going to stick with me!
