Sea Creatures Cookies

Last year for my mother-in-law’s church crab feed live auction I made these cookies. This year I wanted to do something a little different, while still sticking to the under the sea theme.

I found this amazing set of cutters on the Wilton website. Included were so many “sea” creatures that I had a hard time narrowing it down to just a few!

I sketched out my ideas on paper first, but once I hit the cookie it was all freehand.

I outlined in black to give it that cartoon feel. I just love how it makes the colors pop.

The eyes I used the same technique I used on my Santa cookies. I love how googly-eyed it made them and it turned out perfect for these silly sea creatures.

The next day I got an email from my mother-in-law telling me that bidding for my cookies was fierce, but that my husband’s grandpa persevered. I told him next time I will make him his own plate so that he doesn’t have to bid on them. Haha..

Goodbye 2012, Happy 2013!

Happy New Year friends!

20130101-120026.jpg

2012 was a really good year for this little blog. Thank you everyone who follows and reads and comments! You make me want to keep doing this day after day.

I’ve made a few personal blog goals for the coming year, and I can’t wait to share more treats and continue to learn and try new things.

I made the cookies above for our little New Years house party we went to. I used my new curly number cutters my mom bought me for Christmas:

20130101-120110.jpg

I created this color swatch to work from. I wanted bright fun colors, but something a little different than what I normally do.

20130101-115702.jpg

It was fun trying to get my icing to match colors I chose ahead of time.

20130101-115711.jpg

I iced the small tile cookies by pouring the icing over the cookie, like I did with these I Voted cookies. It might be my new favorite method of icing. It’s easy and I don’t have to outline and flood each one. I did the same with the numbers, but in white.

I thinned out the remaining icing and put just a tiny bit into a squeeze bottle. Then I squeezed it and let the color splatter all over the numbers. (Saw this technique on Sugarbelle’s blog here.) It was fun and came out so much better than I was even hoping!

20130101-115915.jpg

Once the splatter on the numbers dried, I planned on attaching them to a couple base cookies and then icing the bases. But…. I ran out of time. So I used hot glue. Sorry cookies. (Oh and I learned a tip from the cookie gals of Cookie Con. Place some bunched up cling wrap on the platter before stacking the cookies, and they won’t slide around. It worked great!)

20130101-115950.jpg

I stacked the tiles all around the base cookies, and they were ready for the party!

20130101-120049.jpg

I’m so ready for 2013, bring it on!

What goals or resolutions did you make for the New Year?!

Beer and Babies

The men always get left out for the baby showers… so this grandma-to-be decided to throw her son-in-laws (both of her daughters are pregnant) their own party!

An anti-shower if you will.

(Please note that I didn’t say anti-baby. Everyone seems to think that when I say anti-shower.)

Of course there had to be beer…

And a little reminder of what these soon-to-be dads are going to be dealing with…

One daughter knew the sex and the other didn’t, so we did a combination of blue and pink… and I added one mystery baby for luck.

Enjoy the beer while you can guys!

Hope you enjoyed your party!

I Voted Cookies

Today is Election Day!

For some, it’s a day we just want to hurry up and pass because we’re so tired of the ads, the negativity, and the annoying friends on Facebook that don’t share the same views as you.

No matter what you stand for or who you darken that little circle for, what’s important to remember is that this day is about FREEDOM!

For some, just having the ability to vote is an honor. Many fought for that right so we need to take pride in it and exercise that right!

I always feel a sense of pride when I wear my “I Voted” sticker all day long. So I made it into a little cookie!

These cookies I decorated a little bit differently than normal. Mostly because I was lazy.

I also rolled the cookies thicker than normal to try a new technique. (I will get to that once I perfect it!)

Instead of outlining and filling these, I set the cookies on a cooling rack over a bowl and poured the icing over them, letting the excess drip down into the bowl. I had to tap a little and pop some air bubbles, but overall it was very fast and easy!

Normally I outline and detail in buttercream. Since I didn’t make many of these and didn’t need a lot of detail (and didn’t outline them) I decided to skip the buttercream all together and do the detailing in thick icing.

The blue didn’t turn out out great because it was a little too thin, but the red I got nice and thick and worked really well. Just killed my hand a bit. Hats off to the 100% glaze users, you have serious talent!!

I hope you took the time to vote today, no matter who or what it was for!

Scooby Doo Cookies

This may be the most intimidating set of cookies I have ever agreed to do… but it turned out one of the best!

Matthew was having a Scooby Doo party and his mom Michelle surprised him with these matching cookies!

I made Scooby faces….

Scooby Snacks (bones) which topped the birthday cupcakes (I did not make the cupcakes; mom added them when she got home).

…and Mystery Machines! These were tough and may have almost made me crazy, but all that goes out the window when they turn out so cute!

I’m so glad Michelle and Matthew loved their cookies. They’re definitely going to stick with me!

Baby Boy Cookies

I made cookies for a baby shower… the colors on the invite were grey, light orange, and baby blue.

I did the standard onesies, and tried out carriages for the first time… ya know, standard baby shower stuff… then I got it in my head to make an actual baby.

I used this design by Karen’s Cookies as my inspiration. I just LOVE the way they turned out. I don’t have the cute little baby cutter, so I used my teddy bear and cut his little ears off. The same teddy bear I used to make these cookies actually. What a versatile little fella…

I know I just posted about my favorite cookies, but I think these may have topped my list.

They took me for-e-ver… but it was worth it in the end.

P.S. Yes I know there are only 4 toes. It’s all I could fit.

Under the Sea 3’s

The little girl that got the Caillou cookies is now 3!

Her theme was The Little Mermaid, but I thought that Ariel and Flounder were a little out of my comfort zone… we came up with a cookie that is more my style, but would still coordinate well with the feel of the party.

All of the decorations were pink and purple, but I added some bubbles to go with the “under the sea” theme.

Tool Cookies

Remember this baby shower? Can you believe that this little guy turned 1 already? Craziness how time flies!

Mama had a hard time coming up with a birthday theme idea, but somehow she thought of Tools! Perfect for him!

I am so in love with these cookies.

The colors were pulled from the plates she bought for the party.

I also made the lil guy a smash cake.

Simple and easy since it ended up like this anyway:

Cotton Candy Marshmallows

These homemade marshmallows are flavored like cotton candy, colored like cotton candy, and packaged like cotton candy!

Blue’s Clues Party

The baby that was in the belly at this baby shower (more treats here) just turned 1!

Blue’s Clues was the theme, so we made lots of blue sweet treats!

Of course there had to be cookies. These were bagged and used as favors.

20120824-201312.jpg

20120824-201052.jpg

I made cake pops, but we wanted them to have puppy paws on them. I came up with the idea of using an oreo pop mold that I found online. I will definitely be using this technique again!

I did the paw print darker blue. I squeezed candy melts into the paw print, then tapped the tray to settle it into the mold. This also helped get all the air bubbles out. Tapping is key! Then I put these in the fridge for a few minutes to harden up.

20120824-201106.jpg 20120824-201112.jpg 20120824-201119.jpg

With the lighter blue I squeezed a layer across the bottom of the mold. Then tap tap tap!

20120824-201130.jpg 20120824-201139.jpg

I mixed up the cake pop dough like normal, but instead of rolling it into balls I flatted it into a thick pancake and cut circles out of it with a circle cookie cutter. Then I just dropped a disk of cake into each mold and gently pressed it into the candy melts.

20120827-105944.jpg 20120827-105951.jpg 20120824-201145.jpg

Then I just squeezed more candy melts around the cake and across the top, tapped it against the counter, and popped it into the fridge to harden up.

20120824-201157.jpg 20120824-201203.jpg 20120824-201211.jpg

Once they had hardened completely (maybe 20 minutes?) they came out of the molds really easily.

Look how fancy they look!!

20120827-110051.jpg

I also made the little guy his very own smash cake… that will be forthcoming!
