Sesame Street Birthday

Drew just turned 1! He was still in the belly for the baby celebration that I made the green onesies for from this post.

The party theme was Sesame Street, and I got to make all the treats!

Of course there had to be character cookies. I don’t have the cutters, so I made do with what I had. Cookie Monster and Elmo were created with a flower cutter and an egg cutter. For Big Bird I just bent my balloon cutter a bit to make the beak straight.

For these characters, I knew black outlining was the way to go. It really make the features and colors pop.

As always, I free-handed the designs. Cuz that’s how I roll.

Last minute I decided I had to have cookie cereal to go on the cookie monster cookies. I got the idea from cupcakes like this that I’m sure just about everyone has seen at some point. It’s pretty genius whoever thought of it!

I also made cupcakes in the same colors as the characters. Piped simple swirls, and make custom cupcake toppers.

My husband actually made them on the computer for me and I just cut and put them together. :)

My most favorite part was the smash cake! Mama asked for it to be Cookie Monster, so I swirled it in bright blue frosting and piped the happy little face on the top.

Then I stuck cookie cereal to the sides. :)

Mama said Drew loved his cake. Once he got started, it was hard to get him to stop!

Yo Gabba Gabba Cookies

Syler turned 2 this last weekend! Last year I made these Monkey cookies from this post for his party. This year his birthday was Yo Gabba Gabba themed!

Last summer I first learned Yo Gabba Gabba when I made this very special cake for a very special friend of mine. Since then, I have been scared to make Yo Gabba Gabba cookies. Not only are the characters all uniquely shaped, but as a group they total 10 colors!

When Syler’s mom asked me to make Yo Gabba Gabba cookies for the party, I was relieved that she liked the idea of doing simple circle shaped cookies with just the basic elements of each character.

Each cookie was bagged and tied with tags as his party favors.

Mama said Syler loved his cookies!

As part of Lilaloa’s February challenge of Sketching your cookie designs before you cookie them, I thought I would share my sketches. I typically do these before a complicated set, or if I am not sure the exact shape of something (for example when I’m doing animals) so I can play with it until I am happy with the outcome.

So glad Georgeanne had such a fun challenge for February and I got it in in just the nick of time!

I will post more of my sketches soon. Every cookier has their own way of doing things and I’d love to share my method in case it helps anyone else!

Silas turned one over the weekend and his crafty/creative/baking mama threw him a “Little Man” themed birthday.

I made the cookies!

Sea Creatures Cookies

Last year for my mother-in-law’s church crab feed live auction I made these cookies. This year I wanted to do something a little different, while still sticking to the under the sea theme.

I found this amazing set of cutters on the Wilton website. Included were so many “sea” creatures that I had a hard time narrowing it down to just a few!

I sketched out my ideas on paper first, but once I hit the cookie it was all freehand.

I outlined in black to give it that cartoon feel. I just love how it makes the colors pop.

The eyes I used the same technique I used on my Santa cookies. I love how googly-eyed it made them and it turned out perfect for these silly sea creatures.

The next day I got an email from my mother-in-law telling me that bidding for my cookies was fierce, but that my husband’s grandpa persevered. I told him next time I will make him his own plate so that he doesn’t have to bid on them. Haha..

Santa Cookies

The cutter I used to make these Santa’s was a hand-me-down from my mom. It was one that we didn’t always use because the small parts always seemed to break off.

Now that I am rolling my cookies a tad thicker, I knew it would hold up well.

This is what I came up with…

(Click on the picture above to see a larger image.)

I did the first one with an edible food marker on the blank cookie to get my design right. After that they were just free handed.

I love how each one has a little bit different personality!

I actually meant these guys to have a black belt across the belly, but I was too quick to clean (for once) and had thrown out all my black buttercream. Oh well, I like em anyway!

Fall Leaf Cookies

I tried a few new things with these fun fall leaves!

Instead of doing regular sugar cookies, I wanted to do my leaves dark so that the fall colors would really pop. For these I used Bridget’s Chocolate Peanut Butter recipe. They are very yummy!

Normally, I roll my cookies very thin. Most cookie decorators roll 1/4 inch or 3/8 inch thick. That is crazy to me! My cookies are typically less than 1/8 inch thick. I wanted to try doing thick one time to see how I liked it. They look cute thick, but personally I just prefer a higher icing to cookie ratio. :)

The third new thing I tried with these was the way I iced them. Normally I outline, flood, detail, etc. Recently I tried pouring the icing over the cookies. This time I dipped them, and let the excess drip off and down the sides. And since I was doing fall leaves in bright fall colors, I swirled the icing. It was fun and each cookie turned out completely different!

I Voted Cookies

Today is Election Day!

For some, it’s a day we just want to hurry up and pass because we’re so tired of the ads, the negativity, and the annoying friends on Facebook that don’t share the same views as you.

No matter what you stand for or who you darken that little circle for, what’s important to remember is that this day is about FREEDOM!

For some, just having the ability to vote is an honor. Many fought for that right so we need to take pride in it and exercise that right!

I always feel a sense of pride when I wear my “I Voted” sticker all day long. So I made it into a little cookie!

These cookies I decorated a little bit differently than normal. Mostly because I was lazy.

I also rolled the cookies thicker than normal to try a new technique. (I will get to that once I perfect it!)

Instead of outlining and filling these, I set the cookies on a cooling rack over a bowl and poured the icing over them, letting the excess drip down into the bowl. I had to tap a little and pop some air bubbles, but overall it was very fast and easy!

Normally I outline and detail in buttercream. Since I didn’t make many of these and didn’t need a lot of detail (and didn’t outline them) I decided to skip the buttercream all together and do the detailing in thick icing.

The blue didn’t turn out out great because it was a little too thin, but the red I got nice and thick and worked really well. Just killed my hand a bit. Hats off to the 100% glaze users, you have serious talent!!

I hope you took the time to vote today, no matter who or what it was for!

Cherry Chocolate Dr. Pepper Cupcakes

My coworker Apryle invented these, and I promised I would make them for her.

This is a soda cake.

I made soda cupcakes once before (Sunkist Cupcakes), so I was excited to try a new flavor combo.

Chocolate Fudge Cake + a can of Dr. Pepper. That’s it! (Literally – no eggs, water, oil, anything. Just a can of soda.)

Bake em up for 18-20 min at 350*.

For the Cherry Frosting:

1 lb powdered sugar

1 stick (1/2 cup) salted butter

3 tbsp milk

1 tsp vanilla extract

1 tsp cherry extract

red food coloring

Mix all ingredients until smooth and fluffy. Pipe or spread onto cupcakes.

My brother’s review of Apryle’s cupcake:

“The cherry is almost too overwhelming, but it works with the chocolate cupcake. The Dr. Pepper taste is subtle but it’s definitely there.”

….and Apryle’s review:

“The cherry is really sweet and the Dr. Pepper is subtle, but it was really good!”

Fireball Frosting

This frosting is awesome.

Seriously awesome.

20120816-170316.jpg

I used my regular buttercream recipe, but substituted 1/2 the vanilla for cinnamon oil. They’re just a tad spicy, but not too hot to finish the rest of the cupcake. Or 5 more after that.

20120816-170331.jpg

I used it on plain white mini cupcakes here because I wanted the frosting to be the star. Not that it wouldn’t be anyway.

If you love cinnamon, you must get some cinnamon oil and flavor your life accordingly.

20120816-170321.jpg

There will be more cinnamon to come soon, I promise you that.
